The Weed Ladies of Naper Settlement

The Weed Ladies of Naper Settlement: A Blooming Tradition in Naperville

If you’ve ever wandered through the charming grounds of Naper Settlement, you may have noticed the welcoming Daniels House brimming with vibrant wreaths, floral arrangements, and one-of-a-kind seasonal décor. Step inside and you’ll discover the work of a beloved Naperville treasure, The Weed Ladies.

Now, before you picture gardening gloves and dandelion pulling, let’s set the record straight: the Weed Ladies aren’t battling weeds, they’re transforming them into beautiful art. Their whimsical name dates all the way back to 1969, when a small group of civic-minded women began crafting floral designs to support Naper Settlement. At the time, many of their creations featured dried grasses and roadside plants. The husband of one member jokingly dubbed them the “Weed Ladies,” and the name, full of charm and character, stuck.

More than 50 years later, the Weed Ladies are still going strong, blending tradition with creativity. Today, their work includes not only dried and natural materials but also silk flowers, succulents, and other artistic touches that make each piece unique. Their mission remains as heartfelt as ever: creating beautiful floral designs while supporting Naper Settlement’s educational and preservation programs.

A Seasonal Treat for the Community

The Weed Ladies host three major sales each year: the Spring Sale in May, the Fall Sale in September, and the Winter Sale in November. During December, their festive arrangements are a highlight of Naper Settlement’s Holly Jolly Days, where visitors can find holiday décor that makes any home sparkle.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. During the warm summer months, the Weed Ladies bring their creations to life every Tuesday in July and August at the Naper Settlement Farmers Market. Locals and visitors alike enjoy browsing the Daniels House, transformed into a mini floral boutique filled with colorful wreaths, seasonal centerpieces, and custom orders.

More Than Just Flowers

What makes the Weed Ladies truly special is their commitment to community and history. Proceeds from every wreath, bouquet, and centerpiece go directly toward Naper Settlement’s programs, funding educational experiences, preservation efforts, and interactive exhibits that connect Naperville residents to the city’s rich past.

The group also tends a memorial garden, named in honor of founding member Kay Stephens. This garden is home to many of the heirloom plants that are carefully dried and later transformed into the very arrangements you’ll find for sale. It’s a beautiful full-circle process: grown with love, designed with care, and shared with the community.

An Invitation to Join the Tradition

Part of the Weed Ladies’ charm is the warm, welcoming spirit they share with everyone who steps into Daniels House. Volunteers greet visitors with stories behind their arrangements and tips on how to display them. And for those looking to get involved, the group is always excited to welcome new volunteers. Whether you have a talent for floral design, a passion for gardening, or simply enjoy helping out at community events, there’s a place for you with the Weed Ladies.

Why They’re Still Called the Weed Ladies

Some newcomers chuckle at the name, but longtime fans know it represents something bigger than flowers. The Weed Ladies are a reminder that beauty can come from the most unexpected places, even the humblest of weeds. Their story is one of creativity, friendship, and dedication to preserving Naperville’s history.

So the next time you’re looking for something unique to brighten your home or just want to support a community tradition with deep local roots, stop by the Daniels House at Naper Settlement. You’ll leave not only with a beautiful floral treasure but also with the joy of knowing you’ve helped keep Naperville’s history blooming.
